This summer Huang injected 94 of his flagship consumer electronics retail outlets (out of 135) into his Hong Kong-listed vehicle in exchange for a US$1.1 billion convertible bond with a view to preparing the way for later rounds of financing. With sales last year of US$2.1 billion (2002: US$1.5 billion), GoMe today is China’s largest consumer electronics retail chain with 10,000 employees. The low-key Huang started out in 1987 with his brother, Huang Junqin (number 27), buying electronic appliances cheaply in the South and selling them up North, soon setting up their retail business in Beijing and going their separate ways in 1993. His brother has since diversified to property and hi-tech. |
