With sales last year of US$590 million (2002: US$600 million) and paying taxes of US$10 million (2002: US$16 million), People’s Food has 9,500 employees. The low-key Ming, a former doctor, started with medical equipment in 1993, before joining up with a local joint venture partner to build one of China’s most successful meat product businesses. The similarities with Ye Weichen (number 80), are striking: both started in the meat business at around the same time, merged with existing local business and managed a Singapore listing in 2001. |
