| personal info: | With traditional Chinese medicines at its core, Shenqi has this year announced a further expansion into the spirits business. With sales the year before of US$85 million, much of which is from exports, and paying taxes of US$8.5 million, Shenqi has 6,000 employees. Shenqi today has interests that span tourism, real estate, chemicals, a local commercial bank and an insurance company. A former barefoot doctor, Zhang’s break came after 1985 with a remedy for athlete’s foot and later a laryngitis tablet. Previously a delegate to the National People’s Congress for two terms, Zhang is a delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the head of his provincial business chamber. Zhang this year came second on our China Philanthropy List, donating his herbal medicines during SARS. |
