▪ PAPER QUEEN ZHANG YIN AND REAL
ESTATE DEVELOPER ZHANG XIN ARE THE TWO RICHEST SELF-MADE WOMEN IN WORLD
▪ 26-YEAR OLD YANG HUIYAN
INHERITED US$17.5 BILLION FORTUNE FROM FATHER, MAKING YANG THE RICHEST ASIAN
WOMAN
Last year, Zhang Yin became the richest self-made woman in the world. This year
six of the top ten richest self-made women in the world are from Mainland
China.
Paper Queen Zhang Yin, 50 years, has cemented her place as the richest self-made
women in the world after seeing her wealth triple to US$10 billion. The second
richest self-made woman in the world is also a Chinese, Zhang Xin (no relation
to Zhang Yin), 42-year old co-founder of Beijing real estate developer SOHO
China, which listed this month in Hong Kong.
Top of the 2007 Hurun Richest Women in China is 26-year old Yang Huiyan with
US$17.5 billion. Her fortune originates from her 59.5% share in property
developer Country Garden, founded by father Yang Guoqiang, who transferred his
shares to Yang Huiyan on her graduation from university in the US.
“The success of Chinese women in business has taken everyone by surprise,” says
Rupert Hoogewerf, publisher of Hurun Report, a luxury business magazine with an
audited circulation of 60,000/ “The stories of these women tell the story of
Chinese women in business.”
Dramatic changes in the role of Chinese women.
Since winning equal status in the eyes of the law after 1949, women have
begun to play a more active role in Chinese society, but it was not until the
economic reforms of 1978 that women had the opportunity for economic
independence. Chinese women also have a shorter career break from childbirth,
partly as a result of the one-child policy limiting them to one child only, and
partly a result of the tradition that children are brought up by the
grandparents. This is in stark contrast to the Western world, where women often
have more than one child and then bring them up themselves. Last year was a
breakthrough when Zhang Yin became the first women to top the Hurun China Rich
List.
Some stats
The average wealth of the richest women jumped five-fold to US$1.1 billion, up
from US$240 million last year, mainly as a result of the large wealth increases
of Yang Huiyan, Zhang Yin and Zhang Xin. The average age is 43.9 years, slightly
lower than last year’s average of 44.5 years.
