The Hurun Research Institute released last October the inaugural Hurun Global Unicorn List 2019a ranking of the world’s billion-dollar tech ‘start-ups’ founded in the 2000s and not yet listed on a public exchange.  This is the first year of the list, and follows on from the 6th quarterly Hurun China Unicorn Index. Valuations are a snapshot of 30 June 2019.

Hurun Research found 494 unicorns in the world, based in 24 countries and 118 cities. Set up seven years ago on average, they are worth US$3.4bn on average and US$1.7tn in total.

Hurun Report Chairman and Chief Researcher Rupert Hoogewerf said: “We have found just under 500 unicorns in the world. The Hurun Global Unicorn List 2019 is designed to inspire entrepreneurship amongst wannabe entrepreneurs and encourage investors. These young companies, only seven years old on average, are the world’s most exciting start-ups, leading a new generation of disruptive technology.”

“China and the USA dominate with over 80% of the world’s known unicorns, despite representing only half of the world’s GDP and a quarter of the world’s population.  The rest of the world needs to wake up to creating an environment that allows unicorns to flourish in.”

Where are the World’s Unicorns based?

The world’s unicorns are based in only 24 countries around the world, spread around 118 cities. China pipped the USA to lead by 206 versus 203, together accounting for over 80% of the world’s unicorns. Europe has 35 unicorns.

India was third with 21 unicorns, led by payments solutions platform One97 Communications (US$10bn), cab aggregator Ola Cabs (US$6bn), online educator Byju’s (US$6bn), and travel-stay finder OYO Rooms (US$5bn).

The UK was fourth with 13, led by health and beauty online retailing platform The Hut Group (US$5bn). Interestingly, the UK has more unicorns than Germany and France combined.

By city, Beijing is the world’s unicorn capital with 82, comfortably ahead of San Francisco with 55, followed by Shanghai, New York and Hangzhou. As a region, Silicon Valley leads the world with 102 or 21% of the world’s unicorns.

What industries are the World’s Unicorns from?

E-commerce and fintech make up 31% of the world’s unicorns, followed by cloud and AI. The world’s unicorns span 25 industries, with the ‘Big 5 Industries’ making up half of the total. E-commerce. Whilst Amazon may have grown to become the world’s leading ecommerce platform, there are plenty of e-commerce start-ups that are competing in this space. South Korea’s largest online retailer Coupang, US online market-place Wish and CARS from China lead the industry with US$9bn valuations, followed by China’s Meicai and Indonesia’s Tokopedia (US$7bn). Total value of all the e-commerce unicorns in the world is US$147.5bn, or 9% of the total value of the club.

FinTech. Fintech is revolutionizing the world financial sector and disrupting the calm demeanour of the long established banks. The most valued FinTech unicorn is Ant Financial (US$150bn), followed by online wealth management platforms Lufax (US$38bn) and Stripe (US$23bn). FinTech dominates with US$376bn or 22% of the total value of all unicorns.

With its own online healthcare ecosystem, PingAn Healthcare Technology is the most valuable at US$9bn. Following is Hangzhou-based WeDoctor, an online healthcare outfit at US$6bn, and United Imaging (US$4bn).

Media & Entertainment has 24, or just above 4.8% of the unicorns. The most valued in the sector is ByteDance (US$75bn), followed by China-based Kuaishou (US$18bn). Which are the world’s Most Successful Investors?

Sequoia is far and away the world’s most successful investment platform at finding and investing into unicorns, investing into one in five of the world’s known unicorns, followed by SoftBank, Tencent, Tiger, IDG, Goldman Sachs and Alibaba. Hoogewerf says, “Unicorns are supposed to be hard to find, but investors like Sequoia, Softbank and Tencent make it look easy.”

An interesting difference between China and the USA is that China’s big tech companies are also some of the world’s biggest investors into start-ups.  The likes of Amazon and Google by contrast, barely make the Top 100 investors.

5 unicorns are known to have surpassed US$1 billion valuation within one year of their founding, and they all come from China.  24 and 36 unicorns managed to pass the threshold in 1 and 2 years respectively. Post 2 years, almost the same number of companies have reached unicorn status in each of the further slots of years to unicorn. Almost 60% of the unicorns in the Hurun Global Unicorns index achieved the unicorn status between 3rd and the 6th year since their inception.

Methodology

The Hurun Global Unicorns 2019 is compiled by Shanghai-based Hurun Research Institute with a 30 June 2019 cut-off.  We define a ‘unicorn’ as a tech start-up founded in the 2000s that has reached a valuation of US$1bn, backed by professional investors but not yet listed on a public exchange.

Hurun Research believes the Hurun Global Unicorns 2019 to be the first serious attempt to capture all of the world’s unicorns into one list. The Hurun research team has used databases that specialize in recording rounds of investments by the professional investment world, cross-checking the data with some of the world’s top investment houses, industry experts, journalists and media sources. The very nature of these super-fast growing companies makes valuations hard to pin down, but to ensure accuracy of the valuations, the Hurun research team has used the most recent valuation based on a sizeable round. Once a unicorn goes IPO, it is taken off our list.

The cut-off used was 30 June 2019.  Some companies went unicorn in July this year, but are not on the list.  These include Lightricks, Monday.com, DataRobot, MoneyLion and Flixbus.

Hurun Research has been tracking China’s top unicorns for the past six quarters, releasing the Hurun China Unicorn Index.

The Hurun Richest Self-Made Women in the World has been highlighting for over ten years the fact that over 70% of the world’s most successful women in business herald from China, ie Chinese are completely dominant in the world of women in business. The Hurun Art List ranks the top artists alive today in China for the 12th year and has become a household name amongst artists.

Media and Events ‘The Hurun brand gets 200 million views a month in China’

The Hurun brand has become one of the few non-Chinese media brands to become a household name across China.
