LEADING AUTHORITY ON GLOBAL WEALTH RELEASES THE HURUN CHINA PHILANTHROPY LIST 2021

l  Huang Zheng, 41, became China’s most generous individual with a US$1.85bn donation. Huang and some of the founding team donated 2.37% of Pinduoduo’s shares to a foundation to promote social responsibility construction and scientific research. He Xiangjian, 79, donated US$970mn ranked 2^nd to build a hospital in his hometown Foshan. Xu Jiayin ranked 3^rd with a US$370mn donation, mainly towards a Guizhou Provincial Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.

l  This year’s Top 10 philanthropists are all on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021, and the average donation after excluding Huang Zheng accounts for 0.9% of their average wealth.

l  From the place of birth, Guangdong entrepreneurs led with 27% of the list; followed by Fujian entrepreneurs, accounting for 19%. From the company headquarters, Guangdong has the most, accounting for 36%; followed by Beijing, accounting for 21%.

l  5 female philanthropists on the list. They are Yang Huiyan from Country Garden, Zhang Ronghua from the Rockcheck, Shu Ping from Haidilao, Yang Jin from the Anatole Investment, and Fan Hongwei from Hengli Group.

l  11 philanthropists (28%) on the list are the 13th NPC deputies (Pony Ma Huateng, Zhang Zhixiang, Yang Yuanqing and Chen Guoying) or the CPPCC members (Xu Jiayin, Yang Guoqiang, Xu Jiankang, Xu Rongmao, Ji Haipeng, Gong Junlong and Liu Yonghao).

l  The average age is 58 years old, 3 years older than last year.

l  59% come from listed companies.

(11 May 2021, Shanghai) The Hurun Research Institute today released the Hurun China Philanthropy List 2021, a ranking of the most generous philanthropists from Greater China. This is the 18th year of the Hurun Philanthropy List.

Hurun Research based donations on cash and share donations, together with legally binding commitments, made in the period from 1 April 2020 to 30 April 2021. Donations made by a corporate were assigned to individual shareholders according to the percentage of their shareholding. In the case of Xu Jiayin, for example, donations ascribed to his name for the purpose of the Hurun Philanthropy List took into account donations made by Evergrande multiplied by his 78% shareholding in the group, as well as donations made in his individual name.

Huang Zheng become China’s most generous with US$1.85bn  donation for the first time. He donated 2.37% of his shares in the name of his individual and founding team to establish the foundation to promote social responsibility construction and scientific research. Based on the closing price on July 1, 2020, the scale of the foundation is worth about US$2.6bn. Huang ranked 19^th on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$69bn.

He Xiangjian donated US$970mn ranked 2^nd. He donated to the non-profit Heyou International Hospital in the name of the group and individuals, with an initial payment of US$862mn and an estimated investment of US$1538mn. This is his 14th time on the Hurun China Philanthropy List and he was listed on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$43bn ranked 32^nd.

Xu Jiayin ranked 3^rd with US$370mn donation. His main donations include: donated US$215mn to the Guizhou Provincial Foundation for Poverty Alleviation in the name of the group; donated US$115mn to Guangdong Poverty Alleviation Day. Xu listed on the Hurun China Philanthropy List for 17 consecutive years and he ranked 50^th on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$31bn.

Yang Guoqiang & Yang Huiyan donated US$240mn ranked 4^th. The main donation include: donated US$105mn to Guangdong Poverty Alleviation Day; donated US$20mn to the Guohua Memorial Middle School Project in the name of the family, etc. Yang listed on the Hurun China Philanthropy List for 16 consecutive years and he ranked 46^th on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$33bn.

Xu Hang donated US$160mn ranked 5^th. The main donation include: donated US$154mn in the name of personal and foundation to the World Laureates Development Foundation for a period of five years to support basic scientific research, international scientific cooperation and exchanges, and support young scientists' growth projects. This is his second time on the Hurun China Philanthropy List. Xu ranked 71^st on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$23bn.

Li Yongxin donated US$110mn ranked 6^th. The main donation include: donated US$154mn in the name of the group to the Peking University to establish the Peking University Offcn Development Fund to support the development of Peking University; donated US$15.4mn to support educational poverty alleviation in Sichuan Province, etc. This is his second time on the Hurun China Philanthropy List. Li ranked 80^th on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$22bn.

Xu Jiankang &Xu Huafang donated US$100mn ranked 7^th. The main donation include: donated US&77mn to Fudan University in the name of Xu Jiankang Charity Foundation; donated US$15mn to Xiamen University in the name of Xu Huafang, etc. Xu Jiankang &family were listed on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$2.4bn.

Zhang Yiming donated US$80mn ranked 8^th. The main donated include: donated US$65mn in the name of individual and group to the Humanitarian Relief Fund for Medical Workers in partnership with the China Red Cross Foundation for medical humanitarian assistance in the fight against the Covid-19. He was listed on the Hurun China Philanthropy List second times. Zhang ranked 26^th on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$54bn.

Zhu Mengyi & family donated US$60mn ranked 9^th. The main donated include: donated US$55mn to Guangdong Poverty Alleviation Day. This is the 17^th time that Zhu Mengyi & family were listed on the Hurun China Philanthropy List. Zhu Mengyi & family were listed on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 with US$8.6bn.

Huang Rulun & Huang Tao & family donated US$45mn ranked 10^th. The main donated include: donated US$18mn to the OCCFC to fight the COVID-19 pandemic; donated US$3mn to the Tsinghua University; donated US$1.5mn to Central South University Education Foundation, etc. Huang Rulun & Huang Tao & family were listed on the Hurun China Philanthropy List 17^th times and listed on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021

Dang Yanbao ranked 10^th with US$45mn donation. He donated US$46mn to Yan Bao Charity Foundation. He has been on the Hurun China Philanthropy List 9 times and he was listed on the Hurun Global Rich List 2021 ranked 140^th with US$16bn.

Donation Cause

Among the philanthropists on the list this year, the number of donations to education is still the largest, and the proportion has increased from 31% last year to 39%; under the influence of the Covid-19, the number of donations in Healthcare continues to rise, and the proportion has increased from 17% last year to 27%, ranked second; poverty alleviation increased from 11% last year to 24%, ranked third.

Methodology

To put together a comprehensive list of the largest philanthropists of China is an almost impossible task. However, we believe that the Hurun Philanthropy List, published since 2004, is the most serious and authoritative effort to date, identifying the individuals and highlighting the causes they donate to.

To make this list, the Hurun Research Institute surveyed 3000 of China’s most successful entrepreneurs, including more than 2000 from the recently released Hurun China Rich List 2020 and the Hurun Global Rich List 2021, meticulously cross referencing the results with media reports and charitable foundations. In the course of the research, Hurun Research Institute attended non-profit-related seminars, as well as meeting with scholars, experts, philanthropists and senior members of charitable foundations.

Hurun Research includes cash and cash equivalents pledged with legally binding commitments for the twelve month period from 1 April 2020 to 30 April 2021. When comparing previous lists, please note that for corporate donations Hurun Research for the second year running multiplied the donation by an individual’s shareholding in the company.

The list includes only individuals born and bred in mainland China regardless of the passport they currently hold. Values are rounded, and past figures are subject to exchange rate fluctuations.
