(17 April 2024, Shanghai) The Hurun Research Institute, in association with Yuanzheng Culture, today released the Yuanzheng Culture · Hurun Best Towns in the World for Ceramic Arts 2023, a list of the Top 10 towns in the world for ceramic arts, and the Yuanzheng Culture · Hurun China Top Pottery Companies for Everyday Living 2023, a ranking of the Top 50 companies from this industry. This is the first year of the list.

Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report, said,

“I am delighted to release the list of the Best Towns in the World for Ceramic Art together with Jiangxi-based traditional culture promotion business Yuanzheng Culture. I hope this list will raise awareness amongst consumers of the influence these towns continue to have on art ceramics and encourage more investors to enter into the industry. The plan is to release a series of Global Ceramics Lists over the next ten years, to tell the story of China’s pottery and promote a better understanding of art ceramics.”

“Humans have been firing pottery for tens of thousands of years, and since the clay used to make pottery is found all over the world, many civilizations invented pottery independently. But porcelain was different. Europeans only started making porcelain in the 18th century, after James Watt had already developed the universal steam engine. Porcelain has long been regarded as something precious in Europe, for example, on the occasion of the Emperor Qianlong's 83rd birthday in 1793, porcelain appeared in the British delegation's gift.”

“Many households around the world today have a glass cabinet for displaying their china. This grew over the years to become a symbol of sign of taste and aesthetics vision.”

“When it comes to towns famous for their pottery, you might think of Valencia in Spain or Foshan in China, however our list today only includes towns that predominately make ceramic arts, so towns famous for tiles and industrial products are not included in the list.”

“Five of the Top 10 Ceramic Art Towns are from China, led by Jingdezhen in Jiangxi, Dehua in Fujian, Liling in Hunan, Chaozhou in Guangdong and Yixing in Jiangsu. 4 of the others are from Europe, led by Meissen in Germany, Delft in the Netherlands, Limoges in France and Stoke-on-Trent in the UK, with one from Japan, Arita.”

“Today, we also released the Yuanzheng Culture · Hurun China Top Pottery Companies for Everyday Living 2023, a list of the Top 50 dinnerware and other tabletop porcelain manufacturers, based on the size of the business, their industry leadership and social media influence.”

“The competition in the field of tabletop porcelain is fierce, the product homogenization is a challenge and there is a lot of pressure on prices, so there are not many large companies in this field. Only three are publicly traded.”

“By geographical distribution, Zhuzhou in Hunan has 9 companies on the list, Chaozhou in Guangdong 6, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi 4 and Quanzhou in Fujian 4. Liling is a township within Zhuzhou city and Dehua is within Quanzhou, so the top four cities for tabletop porcelain companies correspond to the top four China cities in our city list.”

“We have produced two sub-lists of ceramic artists: the Yuanzheng Culture · Hurun Influential Masters of Ceramic Arts and the Hurun Young Ceramic Artists with Potential. We ranked the masters of ceramic arts based on a number of factors pertaining to industry recognition. For the ‘Young’ Ceramic Artists with Potential, they had to be under the age of 60, and have achieved positions of leadership and respect.”

Zhang Xuefang, Chairman of Yuanzheng Cultural Industry Group, said, “Yuanzheng Cultural Industry Group upholds the corporate philosophy of 'emphasizing benevolence as the foundation, contributing to society; establishing a business with integrity, and upholding righteousness and transparency; operating with honesty to achieve mutual benefit and mutual success'.
